Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), the best method for big and/or complicated stones, is the most successful of the frequently used procedures for kidney stones. The procedure involves the urologist creating a 12 inch incision in your back and inserting a hollow tube through it to get access to the kidney's inside, where the stone(s), if present, are located. The stones are either taken whole or split into pieces and removed using a stiff metal telescope. PCNL is more risky than other frequently done treatments for kidney stones because it involves making a skin incision and inserting a tube into the kidney. It also necessitates at least an overnight stay in the hospital. We'll get X-rays and lab testing to make sure you're safe during the operation. Just before the procedure, you will be given an antibiotic by mouth or through an IV. The anesthetic staff will fit you with monitoring equipment. You will almost always be given general anesthesia for this surgery. The entire process will take place in the Radiology Suite, where you are brought.
